Removing the top cover of the Mamiya/Sekor 500 DTl and 1000 DTL.
Open the film door and stick the shaft off a screwdriver in the fork of the rewind shaft. Remove rewind knob by unscrewing counterclockwise.
Remove clear plastic washer.
The exposure meter push-button is only pressed onto the shaft, but there is no easy way to grab it. Prying it off will mar the advance lever collar.
Here the push-button has been raised. This is because I took these pictures during reassembly.
The best way to remove the button is to clutch the collar with a ring wrench and unscrew the collar and the button will come off with it. The collar is LEFT-HAND threaded and secured with a setscrew. You can't get to the setscrew when the meter button covers it, but by applying enough force, the setscrew will score the soft aluminum crank and the collar will turn easily.
Here you can see the score mark left by the setscrew. You can now lift off the advance lever.
Advance lever removed.
Set the ASA dial to 80 to expose a hole in the side of the knob just under the number 30.
Reach inside the hole with a flat-blade screwdriver and loosen the setscrew in the hole. Set shutter speed to B and then lift knob straight off.
The light meter coupling chain is spring loaded and will run off when the knob is lifted. When ready to replace the knob, wind the brass disk counter-clockwise so the post on it is at the 500 position (1000 on the 1000 DTL). You must hold the brass disk with a thin blade while inserting the knob. Wiggle the knob while holding the brass plate under it to let the post fall into its hole in the knob.
Remove the screw next to the brass disk and the one above the film door hinge.
Remove the screw on the rewind side.
Top cover can now be removed. It will most likely catch on the plastic pentaprism cover, so lift up, then rotate forward.

Close up, film advance side.
The viewfinder often becomes loose on these models. Plastic cover can be removed to access top screw.
